Luann Johnson

Residence: Smithville, Missouri
Organization: Westie Rescue of Missouri, Inc.
 Email: westierescuemo@aol.com
Co-founder of Westie Rescue of Missouri, Inc. Rescue representative for WestieUSA and the West Highland White Terrier Club of America. Received Juris Doctorate from the University of Missouri, School of Law in 1983. Administrative Law Judge with the State Tax Commission of Missouri since 1990. Received certificate of Judical Studies from National Judicial College, Reno, Nevada, in 2002. Proud Westie owner since 1992. One son, Aaron (21). And, a wonderful husband, Bill, who helped co-found WRM, and has the patience of a saint to put up with me.

Activities: Together with my wonderful husband, Bill, and my dear friends, Kim, Angie, Sara, Brenda, Teri and all my internet buddies, we have rescued and rehomed nearly 200 Westies since 1999.
I have successfully lobbied for the addition of Missouri's breeding dogs to the tax rolls as an effort to stop puppy mills. But, my ultimate goal is to put all of Missouri's puppy mills out of business, by educating the public about the plight of the breeding dogs in Missouri.
Until we can put the puppy mills out of business, we will continue to take in abused and neglected dogs and give them a second chance for a real life.

I'm a Westie Mom first, and after that, a paramedic supervisor full-time. I'm also a part-time registered nurse. I fell in love with Westies about five years ago when my sister got one, and finally succumbed and got my Abby in May of 2001. Dudley followed in March 2002, and he was a rescue. I then became involved with Westie Rescue of Missouri. My Westies and working with rescue has changed my life in great ways!

Activities: Besides my Westies and my work, I spend a lot of time helping with Westie Rescue of Missouri. I also enjoy travelling, movies, reading, and spending time with my family. My most hopeful goal is to see puppy mills eliminated in Missouri and the world.

I fell in love with the Westie by accident! Gracie entered our life one cold winter day after the death of our terrier mix, Cindar, after 18 years of faithful companionship. My life has NEVER been the same since Gracie arrived.
I live with my husband of nearly 20 years and four furbabies. Two male Yorkies, Chewy and Riley and two Westies, Gracie and Chance, a little male I adopted through rescue after foolishly thinking a PUPPY would be EASY to foster! HA!
Thank you all for such an honor as being among your Hall of Famers... but I feel that EVERYONE on the Terrier Club is a hero - you've all made our work sooooo much more easier, successful and happy! Thank you, thank you, thank you for all you help, support and encouragement.

Activities: I work secularly as an Administrative Assistant and spend my free time in a volunteer ministry and working with the WRM, along with Yorkshire Terrier National Rescue.
Animals have always been my passion and there is nothing in the world like puppy breath and a happy tail when you walk into the house after a looooooooooong day at the office.
It is my hope to see puppymills abolished, petstores no longer selling animals for profit and the humane shelters complain that there simply are not enough dogs and cats for all the waiting homes. Its a dream... but sometimes dreams DO come true!

Georgia Griffis

Residence: Little Rock, Arkansas
Organization:
Helping Hands For Little Paws
 Email: jawjapeach@aol.com

I am a lifelong resident of Little Rock and have LOVED dogs all my life. My slogan is, "I've never met a stray I didn't like!" I have been resuing dogs since I was a child, but have been doing organized rescue for the past 3 years. I am married with a daughter. I have 6 dogs and one cat (and usually a foster or two somewhere in the house!) I work a full-time job (and then some) and spend about 30 hours a week doing volunteer work with Helping Hands for Little Paws. I love it 99.8% of the time.

Activities: My goal as a rescuer is the same as all rescue people - to educate people on the importance of spay and neuter and put ourselves out of business! I would like to see every shelter empty because there are no unwanted animals. Wouldn't it be nice if there were people on waiting lists for an animal to need a home!
I am the webmaster of our website, www.helpinglittlepaws.com and I foster dogs and cats. I send many Sunday afternoons at local pet stores doing adoptions. I also am the treasurer of the organization.
I have learned that rescue work is a FULL TIME JOB! There is ALWAYS an animal in need (that's the bad news) and there are always people looking to adopt (that's the good news). You just have to match them up!
I have always been involved in community volunteering, but this cause has won me over. The animals in shelters have no one to help them. They are dependent on people like me to save them from euthanasia.
I am a very emotional person and very tender hearted -- I never thought I could do this kind of work because of these traits -- what I found out is I CAN do this kind of work because of these traits. I encouage everyone to get involved. If you can just make it the first few months, then you can make it! Get involved, save a life.
      Until there's NONE, rescue ONE!

Residence: Upper Saddle River, New Jersey
Organization:
Northern New Jersey West Highland White Terrier Club
 Email: lynsal@optonline.net

We have been involved in breeding, fostering and rescue for over 25 years. First with Welsh Terriers and now with our beloved Westies. Our love for our animals has always been an integral part of our lives. After becoming fully involved with our breed club rescue we have successfully placed many Westies. Some of these placements have been done with the help of Terrier Club members who not only aided us in helping with transports from New Jersey for an 11 year old to Canada and a pair of two year olds that we wanted to keep together to Michigan, but also provided the forever homes for these three. These transports were made with the assistance of both Cairn and Scotty Rescue groups.
We fell in love with the Westie breed several years ago after meeting our favorite Westie, Roscoe, who lives down the street. Our first Westie, Lily, was purchased from a breeder in January 2004. Then followed Sir William, a pet store rescue at 5 months of age in December 2004. In March 2005, Boomer, a 3 year old male, joined our family after we failed fostering 101. Thus the East Coast Westies 3 was formed! Since failing, we have successfully fostered many Westies, who had they not found a forever home, would have been welcome to stay with us .

Activities: Our goal is to coordinate our efforts with national and local rescue groups as well as individuals to come to the aid of these adorable little dogs. We are always ready to take in an abused or neglected dog and place them with someone who will give them the love they so desperately need and the second chance they have a right to. We are glad to help any furface in trouble, be it needing transport, fostering or finding a new forever home. We enjoy grooming, photographing and just being with our dogs. We love the opportunity to meet other Westie owners at any function we are able to attend and try our best to make them all.

MacGuyver

Residence: Bethlehem,Pennsylvania

Therapy Dogs International Inc., Greater Lehigh Chapter
 Email: sao2@lehigh.edu

I am a handsome 6 year old West Highland White terrier. Born in Frenchtown, NJ, I went to live in eastern Pennsylvania with my Mom and Dad(Sandi and Nick Odrey) at 8 weeks of age. The world was my friend from the beginning and still is!
Like all my westie friends, I am a typical LWD. I am sweet and loving, giving kisses freely. Being playful and cute endears me to everyone. And, I can melt your heart with 'the look'. I also have just the right amount of tenacity to make life interesting. Intelligent? But,of course...I am a WESTIE!
My volunteer work as a therapy dog is greatly enhanced by some special traits. For example, I am a gentle spirit and would never growl at anyone...people or animals. And, I am always on my best behavior in public places. This I attribute to my early socialization and training.
At a young age, I was 'clicker' trained. I graduated basic and intermmediate obedience courses from Great Companions. I hold the Canine Good Citizenship (CGC) title from the American Kennel Club (AKC) and I am a registered therapy dog with Therapy Dogs International, Inc. (TDI). Recently, I achieved the status of Therapy Dogs International Active Volunteer (TDIA) for accumulating over 50 visits with my handler (Mom). We are a team!

Activities: My goal is a simple one...make people smile. Hopefully, I bring them joy and make them forget their problems if only for a short while. Like all my fellow westie and cairn friends, I do this on a daily basis with everyone I meet. In my role as a therapy dog with the Greater Lehigh Therapy Dogs(GLTD), an affiliate of TDI, I do this via regular visits to hospitals and assisted living facilities. I am also an active participant in other GLTD activities, such as, parades, pet fairs and school visits. We often have a booth set up at local arts and crafts festivals where people can come and meet us and learn more about our organization.
I also enjoy other activities. I love to go for car rides with Mom and Dad. I even go on vacations with them. I have been to 7 different states and Canada. Staying in hotels is alot of fun. Shopping trips with Mom are enjoyable too. I get to pose for pictures, shop in the stores and enjoy refreshments with her at outdoor cafes. My hometown is very dog friendly. I love morning walks with Mom, playing fetch with Dad after dinner and cuddling with both of them.
However, I am a true terrier and basic activities are important to me too. Digging holes is one of my favorite past times along with barking at squirrels and the neighbor's cat. I like zooming around the house for no reason, playing soccer with my big red and blue ball and snuggling with Mr. Duck. I like eating treats, playing with my toys and getting lots of attention.
Last, but not least, I am so proud to be an active member the Terrier Club and honored to be the first terrier inducted into the Terrier Club Hall of Fame. Life is Good!

Sue Storms

Residence: Eden Prairie, Minnesota
Organization:
Wayzata Westie Walkers
 Email: hobartharris@netzero.net

I live in the Minneapolis suburb of Eden Prairie, MN with my 13 year-old Westie named Booker and a 4 year old Ragdoll named Hobart. I have been a Terrier Club member since 1998. Between this club and my local dog activities, I have met some of the most wonderful people.
I've been able to meet several TC members in person, including my dear friend Lee Morris who lives in Australia - we have been lucky enough to visit each other several times. All of this due to a LWD! I earn Booker's Milkbones as the Marketing/Tax Administrator in a local CPA firm - I have been there for 14 years. I am originally from the prairie of the windy state of South Dakota.
The day that Booker came into my life in April 1998 changed my life in ways I never dreamed. He is my first Westie and his ownership of me has generated friendships that would not have happened otherwise.

Activities: My first Westie activity was to help my friend Ginny organize a group of Westies for an entry in a parade that is held in the Twin Cities' suburb of Wayzata - thus the name Wayzata Westie Walkers. (pronounced "WhyZetta") That was 7 years ago. 2005 was the 10th anniversary of this award-winning parade unit. Each year the Westies are in costumes in line with a theme. They have been clowns, cowboys, sailors, hobos, patriots, and bumblebees to name a few. Our largest contingent involved 167 costumed Westies!
We have Senior Royalty that wear crowns and ride in convertibles - we also provide transportation for our elderly Westies that aren't able to march. We are known as "The Parade's Perennial Favorites"! We have a water and biscuit picnic after the parade for continued socializing and have now added a style show to the post-parade party.
We were having so much fun at the parade, we gradually started gathering at different times of the year. Every Westie group needs a Social Director and that somehow became me. We now have themed Westie Walks (holidays, seasons and we have even proclaimed a National Bandana Day!). We have had Westie birthday parties, puppy coming-out parties, a 4th of July picnic, welcome showers for rescue adoptions, and a scrapbook group has been formed.
We have attended the annual Blessing of the Animals as a group and we also hold an annual boutique where our crafters, artists and rescue fundraisers come together for a fun day of shopping. Over the years this group has really grown - I manage an email list of more than 250 Twin Cities Westie owners so we have come a long way from a simple entry in a local parade!
We don't perform life-saving feats - we just plain have fun! We simply enjoy getting together with our Westies to celebrate the wonderful friendships that have formed.all because of our LWDs.!
