my westie is 8 weeks old and i can not house train it! it poos everywhere! i take it outside for about 30 mins waiting for it to do its buisness then as soon as i take him in he poos on the carpet. does anyone have any tips?
    • poos everywhere!!! - michelleEmail 01/10/07 at 02:50Reply
When you bring ur dog outside, do you walk him or is he just free to sniff and play around. If you walk him it will relax his intestins and will poop. It may take a 15 to 20 minute walk but believe me it helpts. If he is free to roam around it will not work.

I have a 12-week old Westie named Marty..... adorable, but he is NOT taking to housebreaking at all. My only experience with dogs has always been with labs. They were pretty easy compared to this. Is it unrealistic to expect to be able to start housebreaking a westie at 12 weeks?
    • Housebreaking - Dakota perotEmail 01/12/07 at 14:37Reply
You should try to keep him around an trained dog as long as possible
    • Housebreaking - femiEmail 08/28/06 at 18:51Reply
if you know the dogs are always with labs, is better not to start at all.
      • Housebreaking - michelleEmail 01/10/07 at 02:54Reply
Right after your dog has drank his water or eaten bring him outside right away. He will eventually get the message. You can also install a string and a bell by the door. each time he comes in and has done his thing, take his paw and ring the bell. He will eventually ring the bell when he has to go outside.
    pom poos-First time dog owner - LisayangEmail06/27/06 at 13:19Reply
I need help! I'm acutally really afraid of dogs, and this is my very first dog ever. I don't know anything about dogs. I don't know how to train them to use the potty or anything. He's a 11 weeks old pom poos, and he's name is Spongebob. I got him on 6/26/2006. Please help me and give me some tips!
    • pom poos-First time dog owner - michelleEmail 01/10/07 at 02:59Reply
The dog will sense u are afraid and therefor won't be able to relax before u do. It's nature.U should probably give him to someone u know that would take good care of him. It will be not easy for u to train a dog that is not relaxed.
Westie with the shakes - KatieEmail06/14/06 at 17:22Reply
Westie 6 years old. One breast removed cancer last year. she shakes all over and she won't eat. i was going to take her to the vets, she saw a rabbit, and tour out after it, wagging her tail and seemlingly very happy,so i didn't take her. Today she is acting the same way. Is this normal behavior?

    Allergies - Ricky04/28/06 at 18:37Reply
My vet is suggesting Atopica or allergy shots for my westie for the rest of his life, he's 10 now and hasn't had much trouble with allergies until this yr. Clemastine and Benadryl do not work. I don't know whether to go with the Atopica or the shots.

Hello, I just got my pom. and she is 3 months old and is sweet when tired but she is having fits. She will go after my ankles and flips out runs around the house hides under couch and crowls and then goes after me fighting and biting me. She has drawn blood. what should i do? HELP
    • urgent please need help w/3month pom. - michelleEmail 01/10/07 at 03:06Reply
Jennifer, since your dog is only 3 months old I would think she has a medical reason for behaving so. I would go to the vet for advice. If there is something wrong with her then u could probably get ur money back from the store. If she is a pure pom they must have given you a guarantee when u bought her.

Just try to train her and if that didn't work then take it to a personal trainer. If you do not have the money then try kenel training it.

    Male westie brothers - stacyEmail11/19/05 at 17:47Reply
I have 2 male brothers. Yukon- the Alpha and Kodi. They are 4 years old. Up until now, there have been no problems. Just recently, Kodi will start to growl ferociously when wanting attention and Yukon is around. Then it turns out to be a very scary fight. Any suggestions?

Decided to look for a new westie puppy after mine died a month ago, found an adorable 8 wk old. Was getting him Oct. 30, but as it turns out he has been diagnosed with demodectic mange (generalized). Breeder said its curable but will only get him at 14 wks. Problems? with disease & older to train?

Love Your Westie each day. Our dear "cuddles" is now an angel. only 6yrs young. Took him in for a bloated tummy 9/9. went all wknd to emrg vet. we gave him to heaven 9/12. problem with liver. possible copper sensitivity westies get. TOO Fast! Keep current blood work on your westie.
    • Gone Too Soon - jean gansonEmail 11/03/05 at 15:43Reply
so sorry to hear about your loss.we have had westies all or lives. we had Arnie first. hew was a wonderful boy and lived a full life for 16 years..then came our Grits,,he was such a good dog..and so very smart. he was 17 years old and crossed rainbow bridge last year. now we have our first girl Ivy Rose and her brother Riley..Ivy is doing well but Riley is real sick.we were told recently that they suspect a copper problem since the tests for the liver acids are high...what tests did your vet do to determine your pup's problem..Riley just turned 1 in October...thank you and keep in touch...May God Bless.

    housebreaking a westie pup - LoriEmail07/06/05 at 23:21Reply
Hi! I have a 4-1/2 month old westie, and she is incrediably beautiful and smart. the problem I have with her is that she wees in the house at least 4 to 5 times a day. I take her out every hour and she comes in and wees on my kitchen floor and sometimes looks right at me. H E L P !!!
    • housebreaking a westie pup - sam 03/26/07 at 14:51Reply
if you want to housebreak a pup, put some newspaper outside. when it does the "pee-pee dance", take the dog outside.(the pee-pee dance is when the pup starts shivering, and it starts leaving drops arond the house.) this takes place about 20-25 min. after feeding time for pups, about 45 min for adults.
    • housebreaking a westie pup - HopeEmail 08/06/05 at 01:10Reply
Hi Lori, I am having lots of problems housetraining my Westie puppy too. I have been working with her diligently since she was 7 weeks old, she is now 5 months old and has been having at least one accident a day. I take her outside about every half hour. When she sleeps I put her in her crate, otherwise I am constantly supervising her. I can have her outside in her large kennel area bring her in the house and she will urinate. For a couple of weeks she had almost no accidents, but now she has at least one a day. I've read everything I can get my hands on about training her. My Veterinary has checked her urine for infections and done x-rays of her bladder. She seems to be in perfect health. My husband take her out constantly, praise her abundantly when she potties outside, but still we are having no luck. Does anyone have any helpful suggestions. Many of the web sites say that the puppy should be able to hold it for an hour or more, but my pup can't make it for a half hour sometimes. She also gorges herself on her water. She will drink a whole bowl of water at once if I don't try to stop her. Help!
