The Cairn Terrier facing extinction Vote for this post

Seen some articles a few days ago saying that the Cairn Terrier and also the Scottish Terrier are falling in numbers of registered puppies. By more than half since 2013. The article mentioned this statistic was in the UK unsure if the same is true in the US. Shocking to me that there is a decline in breeding these beautiful smart little vermin hunters.I can't think of a world without this exceptional breed.

That's a sad thought..Around here (east coast USA) puppies of any breed have become so expensive that they are beyond most people's budgets. Even a cross breed puppy like a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle is going for $2500...even more for a female! Praying that terrier breeders rise up and make sure that Cairns and Scottish Terriers are around for eternity!
Love, Deb and Emmie Sue

Yes very true Deb. The cost can be a factor. Popularity to certain breeds can also drive down demand for long established breeds. Now days it's the designer breeds that seem to be gaining popularity. I;m not a fan.

That's so sad. I can't imagine world without these sweet stubborn little guys
I had one for over 16 years and was a delightful little guy.
Hope the breeding improves.

I have been reading articles on this also Sandra but also pray that people do not start breeding them in numbers to sell on like the poor designer dogs and start a Cairn crave just because  some people think they have a rare breed..till they get bored and another poor dog ends up in rescue for the wrong reason.....Thank goodness for Cairn rescue groups.
Hope to be here tomorrow with update and pictures...the owners have come over so have been rather busy the last week...Much Love and Hugs to all

This is just awful. I can't imagine a world without these intelligent, devoted, loving terriers.

Evelyn and I have had a Westie and/or Cairn in our lives for 43 years and I created this website as a passion project nearly 30 years ago. (FYI: Forbes reports that the average lifetime for a website is only 2 years and 7 months - see https://www.forbes.com/sites/forbesagencycouncil/2021/03/01/your-websites-life-span-may-be-shorter-than-you-think/?sh=241ca8d87e85)

Side Note: Recently I was contacted by a domain broker asking me to sell our sister domain name www.terriertown.com to a university for their football team. Their offer was in the low 4 figures, but I passed even though that site has little activity now.

This is very upsetting!!!  I love these wonderful intelligent terriers.  I hope this is not true in the United States.  Unfortunately that is what has happened to our cousins the Skye Terriers.  They are wonderful Scottish dogs.  You can hardy find them now.
